Hey there, friends! Let’s talk about Jason Ritter’s mustache. Now, I know what you’re thinking—does this mean he’s leaving the show ‘Matlock’? Spoiler alert: Nope, not at all. Jason, who's 45 years old and beloved for his role on ‘Parenthood,’ recently set the record straight about this whole mustache drama. In a candid interview with TV Insider on March 25, he confirmed that he’s sticking around for the CBS legal drama despite some rumors swirling around.
So, what's up with that mustache? Well, it’s all for another project he’s working on called Lanterns. Jason shared with TV Insider, "[My mustache is] for another show that I’m working on called Lanterns.” He went on to say, "Mustaches can be shaved off. As soon as I’m done [with Lanterns], I’m back to Matlock.” Pretty straightforward, right? Don’t worry, fans—Jason isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Clearing Up the Confusion
Jason's announcement came after a bit of speculation among fans. Some thought that his new role as Billy Macon in the upcoming DC Comics series Lanterns, which is set to premiere on HBO in 2026, meant he’d be exiting Matlock. Couple that with his recent mustache growth, and the rumors started flying. Fans even theorized that his character, Julian Markston Jr., would be unmasked as the person Kathy Bates' Matty is chasing in her Wellbrexa investigation. They thought Julian might be hiding an important document, which could lead to his departure from the show. But Jason put those theories to rest, confirming he’s not going anywhere just yet.

What's Coming Up in 'Matlock'
Now, let’s talk about what’s coming up in Matlock. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman spilled the tea with TV Insider, revealing that fans will finally learn who hid the mysterious document in the season 1 finale. This episode is set to air on April 17, and trust me, you don’t want to miss it. Jennie explained, "You get the answer to that central question, and then, we push forward into the next season.”

The finale, titled “Tricks of the Trade,” is going to be a two-hour extravaganza. According to the official logline, "When Sarah’s client is arrested after his business partner is found murdered, Billy attempts to help her handle the case while Matty and Olympia contend with a pressing confidential matter, on a special two-hour first season finale of the CBS Original Series MATLOCK, Thursday, April 17 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)." It's going to be epic.
Matty’s Journey
Jennie, who’s 49 years old, also gave us a peek into Matty’s personal struggles in the finale. She explained, "The central tension of the series is that she went in with one mission and then, all of a sudden, she started to like all these people and it became much more difficult.” Matty initially thought she could easily pull off her mission, but forming relationships made things way more complicated. This season finale is going to be a game-changer for her character.
‘Matlock,’ which features lawyer Madeline “Matty” Kingston returning to the workforce to seek justice for the death of her daughter Ellie in the opioid epidemic, was renewed for a second season back in October 2024. CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said in a statement at the time, "This reconceived Matlock was devised by Jennie Snyder Urman with a brilliant surprise plot twist. We knew we had something very special the moment we saw the first episode brought to life by the incredibly talented Kathy Bates. The audience reception and critical acclaim for it has been overwhelming. We can’t wait to get started on a second season.”
