Hey there, friends. Let’s talk about something important. James Van Der Beek, the beloved star of Dawson’s Creek, has revealed that he's been battling stage 3 colorectal cancer. On November 3, 2024, he made the news public in a heartfelt statement. This isn’t just a celebrity story—it’s a human story, and it reminds us all of the strength and grace we can find in tough times.

James Van Der Beek’s Honest Cancer Diagnosis

James didn’t sugarcoat the news. In a candid statement to People, he shared his journey so far. “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” he said. It’s not every day you hear someone talk so openly about their health struggles, but James is doing just that.

He added, “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.” That’s the kind of positivity we all need to hear in moments like these. James isn’t just surviving; he’s thriving, even in the face of adversity.

  • Shortly after sharing his diagnosis with People, James took to Instagram to open up further. He wrote, “‘It is cancer…’ Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis. And I’m one of them.” He acknowledged the weight of those words, noting that there’s no perfect way to announce something so personal. “There’s no playbook for how to announce these things,” he admitted.

James wanted to share his story on his own terms, but life had other plans. “That plan had to be altered” when he learned the news would become public earlier than expected. Still, he remained resolute, saying, “I’ve been dealing with this privately until now, getting treatment and dialing in my overall health with greater focus than ever before.”

He reassured his fans by adding, “I’m in a good place and feeling strong. It’s been quite the initiation, and I’ll tell you more when I’m ready.” The actor also extended his gratitude to those around him. “Apologies to all the people in my life who I’d planned on telling myself. Nothing about this process has occurred on my preferred timeline … But we roll with it, taking each surprise as a signpost, pointing us toward a greater destiny than we would have discovered without divine intervention,” he concluded. “Please know that my family and I deeply appreciate all the love and support.”

A few days later, James opened up about the first signs of trouble. He noticed changes in his bowel habits during the summer of 2023. At first, he thought it might be something simple, like his diet. “I thought maybe I needed to stop coffee,” he told People. “Or maybe not put cream in the coffee. But when I cut that out and it didn’t improve, I thought, ‘All right, I better get this checked out.’”

That decision led him to a colonoscopy, where the unexpected news came to light. “I felt really good coming out of anesthesia, that I’d finally done it,” James recalled. “Then the gastroenterologist said — in his most pleasant bedside manner — that it was cancer. I think I went into shock.”

Though he hasn’t shared detailed specifics about his treatment or recovery, James remains hopeful. “I’m very cautiously optimistic. I’m in a place of healing, my energy levels are great,” he said. “When I’ve been out of the woods completely for what feels like a responsible amount of time, I’ll circle back and let you know.” He added, “I have a lot to live for.”

So, what exactly is colorectal cancer? According to the American Cancer Society, it’s a type of cancer that starts in either the colon or the rectum. Depending on where it begins, it may also be referred to as colon cancer or rectal cancer. These cancers often share many similarities, which is why they’re frequently grouped together.

Most colorectal cancers begin as polyps, small growths on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. These polyps don’t always cause noticeable symptoms, which is why regular screenings are so important. Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the U.S., and the risk increases with age.
