Let me tell you something about Modern Family star Julie Bowen. This woman loves being a mom to her three boys, but she also knows how to keep things light and funny when it comes to parenting. She recently sat down with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on Today to share some hilarious insights into her life as a mom of three teenage boys.
Life with Three Teenage Boys
At 54 years old, Julie Bowen is no stranger to the chaos of raising kids. She appeared on Today With Hoda & Jenna back in September to talk about what it’s really like raising three teenage boys. She shares her kids—Oliver, 17, and twins John and Gustave, 15—with her ex-husband Scott Phillips. Their marriage lasted from 2004 to 2018, but clearly, the bond with her kids remains as strong as ever.
When asked by Hoda and Jenna if her kids sleep a lot, Julie didn’t hold back. “They sleep all day,” she said with a laugh. “Luckily, they’ve all grown at different rates and different times, so they’ve gone into that heavy sleep cycle at various points. It’s like living with three little bears who just hibernate!”

Relatable Parenting Moments
Jenna, who knows a thing or two about siblings since she has a twin herself, chimed in. She mentioned that she and her sister, Barbara Bush, used to sleep a lot when they were younger too. It’s one of those relatable moments for any parent out there. You think your kids are unique, but then you realize everyone’s going through the same thing.
But here’s where things get interesting. Julie revealed that because she works on the East Coast while her kids live in L.A., the only way she communicates with them is through Snapchat. And oh boy, does she have stories to tell about their antics on the app. She even reenacted some of the poses her kids send her throughout the day. Can you picture it? This Hollywood star mimicking her teenage sons’ Snapchat selfies right there on national TV. Priceless!
Haircuts, Hormones, and Heartbreak
Now, let’s talk about haircuts. Julie joked about how her boys have “the stupidest haircuts.” She called them out for their trendy styles, naming them things like the “flo hawk,” “the jiffy pop,” and even “alpaca.” Hoda and Jenna couldn’t stop laughing as Julie described these ridiculous looks. It’s clear that Julie embraces the humor in parenting, even when it comes to something as trivial as hairstyles.
Of course, raising teenage boys isn’t all fun and games. Julie admitted that her sons don’t exactly open up to her about everything. “They don’t talk to me about girls,” she confessed. To combat this, she strategically places books around the house—books about sex, drugs, and other important topics. “I want them to know what to avoid, how not to get people pregnant, how not to get diseases,” she said with a laugh. Classic Julie Bowen: practical yet hilarious.

Hoda brought up the theory that kids tend to open up more to their parents when they’re in the car. Julie agreed, saying, “In the car, no phones allowed. They can listen to whatever music they want, but sometimes I feel like my ears are bleeding from all the loud bass!”
But despite her best efforts, Julie admitted that she feels a bit lonely sometimes. “It’s like I’ve been dumped by three guys I was madly in love with,” she joked. “I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m right here in the kitchen,’ and they never show up. It’s as desperate as I ever felt in high school when I had a crush on a boy. Like, ‘Hi, it’s me, Mom.’”

What About Julie’s Projects?
Finally, the conversation turned to whether Julie’s sons enjoy watching her work. Her answer? A resounding “No.” But she did say they get excited for new projects. Specifically, they’re pumped about her new show, Hysteria!, and the upcoming movie Happy Gilmore 2. “They love Adam Sandler,” she revealed. “They’ve never seen Happy Gilmore 1, but they’re gonna watch Happy Gilmore 2. I don’t get it either, but hey, as long as they’re excited!”
