Here’s a story you’re gonna want to hear about. On an episode of Jeopardy! that aired on October 28, host Ken Jennings had to apologize to a female contestant after delivering a clue that seemed a little off. It happened in the middle of the game, and it sparked a lot of conversation both on and off the screen.
Ken’s Quick Apology
Ken Jennings, who’s been a familiar face on the show since taking over after Alex Trebek’s passing, didn’t waste any time in acknowledging the questionable clue. “Sorry, Heather,” Ken, who’s 50 years old, said almost immediately after reading the clue. He even went on to describe the clue as “a little problematic.”
The Controversial Clue
This particular clue came from the category titled “Complete the Rhyming Phrase.” The clue itself read, “Men seldom make passes at…” The correct response was, “Girls who wear glasses.” Now, this clue was directed at a contestant named Heather Ryan, who, coincidentally, was wearing glasses at the time.

Reactions from Contestants
While the clue had a bit of an awkward vibe, the other contestants had their own take on it. Fellow contestant Will Wallace agreed that the clue was “very” problematic. However, Heather Ryan, the lady in question, didn’t seem too bothered. She simply laughed it off, showing grace under pressure.
Viewers watching at home were quick to jump on social media to share their thoughts. One fan tweeted, “If Jeopardy’s writers had just attributed the quote to Dorothy Parker, this whole situation could’ve been avoided.” Another viewer added, “The apology might actually have been more demeaning than the quote itself, especially when you think about it in terms of how it affects all women.”
The Pressure on Ken
Ken Jennings has been the face of Jeopardy! for quite some time now, stepping up after the legendary Alex Trebek’s passing in November 2020. Initially, he shared hosting duties with actress Mayim Bialik, but he’s been flying solo since Mayim left the show in the spring of 2023.
Despite his best efforts, things haven’t always been smooth sailing for Ken. Rumors have been swirling that executives might be looking to replace him as host, especially after Ryan Seacrest’s successful run on Wheel of Fortune. Ryan stepped in for Pat Sajak after his retirement and scored a 4.88 household rating during his first week as host.
“Ryan’s looking like the game-show golden boy right now, even though his first week was a bit rocky,” a source close to the situation told Closer. “Ken’s hoping for a miracle to turn things around, but the truth is, he doesn’t have the stability or long-term contract that Ryan does. It’s just a matter of time before Ken gets the boot. The higher-ups are definitely brainstorming names to replace him.”
Colin Jost Joins the Franchise
In July, Saturday Night Live comedian Colin Jost was announced as the host of Prime Video’s Pop Culture Jeopardy! This move didn’t sit well with everyone, especially Ken.

“Ken feels like he’s been overlooked here,” another source close to production told Closer. “And honestly, he has a right to feel that way. It’s clear that the bosses are looking to expand their options and bring some fresh energy to the franchise.”
Despite the challenges, Ken remains a fan favorite. “At the end of the day, Ken is the undisputed GOAT when it comes to being the top contestant,” the insider added. “He was also a close friend of Alex Trebek, and that goes a long way with fans.”
