Liza Minnelli Opens Up About Her Parents’ Turbulent Marriage

There’s no denying that Liza Minnelli grew up in one of the most iconic families in Hollywood history. But as she recently revealed, life behind the glitz and glamour wasn’t always picture-perfect. In a candid conversation with Michael Feinstein for Interview Magazine, Liza, now 78, shared insights into the complexities of her childhood, shaped by her legendary parents—Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli.

A Childhood Between Glamour and Challenges

When asked about the most glamorous and challenging aspects of growing up, Liza didn’t hesitate to credit her father, Vincente, for the former and her mother, Judy, for the latter. “The most glamorous was my dad, hands down,” she laughed. “He was this incredible director who let me tag along to movie sets. I’d watch him work his magic with legends like Cyd Charisse and Gene Kelly. It was like stepping into a dream world every time.”

But when it came to her mother, things were more complicated. “My mom was fascinating, no doubt. She knew everyone—literally everyone!—and they’d all come over. It was like living in the heart of showbiz. But let’s just say, she wasn’t always easy to be around. I had to navigate that complexity while bouncing back and forth between them after they split.”

Judy and Vincente’s marriage ended in 1951, though Liza admitted she doesn’t recall much about the divorce itself. “I don’t even remember how old I was when it happened,” she confessed. “But honestly, it didn’t feel like there was much hope for reconciliation. They didn’t really get along, so it wasn’t exactly fun being around them both at once.”

For Liza, the idea of her parents reuniting was never something she wished for. “They weren’t exactly a match made in heaven,” she explained. “Their relationship was rocky, and I think I knew that even as a kid. So, hoping for them to get back together? No, not really.”

A Father’s Love Through Costumes and Magic

Despite the challenges, Liza cherished the bond she shared with her father. “My dad knew me so well,” she reminisced. “He had this knack for knowing exactly what would make me happy. Every Christmas, he’d design these incredible costumes for me—five of them! Imagine getting a ballerina outfit or the one from ‘Shall We Dance’ in The King and I. One year, I even got this adorable green bug costume. It had a little hat with antennae on top. Those costumes weren’t just clothes; they were filled with magic and romance. He put his heart into every single one.”

    Mama’s Complicated Love

Her relationship with her mother, however, was far more intricate. “Mama could be strict,” Liza admitted. “It depended on her mood or whether she was under too much pressure from work. Or sometimes, it was about who she happened to be married to at the time. She was a complex woman, and that made our relationship complex too.”

Despite everything, Liza adored her mom. When Lorna and Joey Luft entered the picture—Judy’s children with Sidney Luft—Liza found herself with a newfound freedom. “Having younger siblings changed things for me,” she explained. “Everyone focused their attention on them, which gave me more time with Dad. He treated me like a princess. Every Saturday, we’d go to the movies. It was our special time together, and I treasured it.”

    Love Endures

Though her bond with her mother was different, Liza still held an unwavering love for her. “Mama was interested in detail, like most moms,” she said. “But she was funny too. And once Lorna and Joey came along, I felt freer. People took care of them because they were so much younger than me. That allowed me to stay with Dad more often, which was wonderful.”
