In a candid conversation with AARP The Magazine for its October/November 2024 issue, Samuel revealed the key ingredients that have kept their union strong through thick and thin. “It’s all about tolerance,” he explained. “Let’s face it—everybody has flaws. And when things get tough, it’s about not giving up, even when it feels like the easy way out would be to throw in the towel.”

Samuel, known for his larger-than-life roles in movies like Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, admitted that both he and LaTanya have made mistakes over the years. “There are moments where I’ve done some crazy stuff,” he confessed. “And she’s had her moments, too, whether in her mind or in reality. But at the end of the day, you’ve gotta ask yourself, ‘Is this something worth breaking up over? Or do we just need to sit down, talk it out, and work through it?’”

Samuel also highlighted the importance of knowing what to overlook in a relationship. “There are certain quirks or habits that you just have to learn to ignore,” he said. “LaTanya’s one of those people who’s learned to let go of some of my idiosyncrasies. And one thing she had to come to terms with early on is that I’m going to work. I’m going to keep working until it’s time to step away. That’s just who I am.”

Now 75 years old, Samuel has been married to LaTanya, 74, since 1980. Together, they’ve raised one daughter, Zoe Jackson, born in 1982. Through the ups and downs of life in the spotlight, their bond has only grown stronger.

A Humorous Take on Their Engagement Story

During a lighthearted appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show in May 2023, Samuel shared a funny story about how their engagement came to be. “One day, I came home, and she already had these invitations printed up,” he recalled with a laugh. “She handed me a stack and said, ‘Be here.’”

However, LaTanya’s version of the story differs slightly. According to her, Samuel actually sought permission from her grandfather before proposing. “She told me her granddad wanted to walk her down the aisle before he passed away,” Samuel explained. “So I went and asked him for her hand.”

While both accounts may be true, Samuel admitted that his memory might not be entirely reliable. “To be honest, I was on drugs back then, so who knows what was really going on in my life at the time,” he joked. “But hey, I like my version better—it’s way funnier.”

A Bumpy Road to the Altar

Even planning their wedding wasn’t without its challenges. “The biggest issue was that LaTanya had 23 bridesmaids, and I didn’t have 23 friends,” Samuel admitted with a chuckle. “So I had to get creative. I asked my friends if they could bring along anyone who wasn’t busy that day, just to balance things out.”

Despite these minor hiccups, the couple persevered, and their union has become one of the most celebrated in Hollywood. Fans continue to admire their unwavering commitment to each other.

LaTanya once shared her thoughts on their enduring partnership in an interview with People in March 2022. “From the very beginning, we believed that one of the most revolutionary things Black people could do was stay together and raise their children in a traditional family structure,” she said. “There’s this misconception that African American families are just children being raised by single mothers, but that’s not true. We wanted to change that narrative, so we made a conscious decision to stick it out, no matter what.”

Samuel echoed her sentiments, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and love. “It’s about two people who truly care for each other, support each other, and look out for each other’s best interests,” he added.
