John Schneider Opens Up About New Love After His Wife's Passing

During a heartfelt appearance on "Grace Begins, The Podcast" on May 29, John Schneider, now 64, shared how he felt when he thought love might never come knocking again. “God sent a widower to a widow and a widow to a widower who gets it, who understands,” he said. “Because I tell you what, I was ready to throw in the towel, to give it all up — everything.”

It’s hard to imagine someone walking away from life, love, and all the things that make this world worth living in. But that’s exactly where John found himself after losing Alicia. The pain of her passing was so deep that it almost consumed him. Yet, in the midst of that darkness, a light appeared.

Meeting the Dame Who Changed Everything

Now, here’s the kicker. John wasn’t looking for love. In fact, the idea of dating or even holding another person’s hand seemed utterly repulsive to him. But then, something miraculous happened. He met someone who changed his perspective. “Then just when I thought the very notion of dating or holding another hand was repulsive, I met this one, that crazy Dame over there,” he said, referring to his new partner who was sitting off-camera during the podcast.

John didn’t share much about her, but it’s clear that she’s someone who understands the weight of grief. She’s not just any woman; she’s a widow herself, and that shared experience has created a bond that’s hard to come by.

A Year Without Alicia Allain

Let’s take a moment to remember Alicia Allain, the love of John’s life. She passed away in February 2023 at the age of 53 after a four-year battle with breast cancer. John shared the devastating news on Facebook, writing, “My beautiful Smile is pain free, living in her new body alongside Jesus.”

Losing someone you love is one of the hardest things a person can go through. For John, it felt like the end of the world. “I can honestly say I didn’t want it. I was done,” he admitted on the podcast. “And if that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have been here, there’s not a chance in the world.”

John has spoken openly about how he’s coped with his grief. Spending time with Alicia’s parents and friends who’ve also experienced loss has been a lifeline for him. “You don’t have to talk about it, but just being with other people who understand helps,” he told Closer in October 2023. “Otherwise, you feel like the odd person in the room, like nobody gets it. [My friend and I] look across at couples who are holding hands with a little bit of jealousy, honestly.”

Honoring Alicia Through Music

Music has always been a part of John’s life, and after Alicia’s passing, it became a way for him to honor her memory. He began working on his album We’re Still Us, pouring his heart and soul into every song. “The only way I get through the day is by distracting myself,” he shared. “I was at an emotional crossroads. But I know that Alicia loves the music that we did, so I had to do something to honor her.”

Each song on the album is deeply personal, a tribute to the love they shared and the life they built together. “I’m certain it is inspired by God, because almost all of these song titles came to me immediately,” he said. “They say people die twice, when they stop breathing and the last time their name is mentioned,” he added. “My mission is to keep Alicia going for as long as I’m here.”
