Susan Lucci Opens Up About Life After Loss: No Plans To Date Anytime Soon

Susan Lucci on Moving Forward After Loss

Let’s talk about Susan Lucci, the iconic soap opera star who’s been a household name for decades. Recently, she opened up about her personal life in a candid conversation with Entertainment Tonight, revealing her thoughts on dating after the passing of her beloved husband, Helmut Huber, in March 2022. For those who don’t know, Susan and Helmut were together for an incredible 53 years before his untimely death at the age of 84. Now, as Susan navigates this new chapter in her life, she’s making it clear that romance isn’t on her radar just yet.

When asked about re-entering the dating scene, Susan responded with a heartfelt honesty that resonates with anyone who’s ever experienced loss. "I know everybody’s different, I can’t imagine it, you know?" she shared on Monday, July 8. "Never say never, but I just can’t imagine [it]." It’s clear that Susan is taking her time to heal and honor the memory of her late husband in her own way.

Turning Down 'The Golden Bachelorette'

At 77 years young, Susan Lucci is still as vibrant and engaged as ever. In May, she revealed that ABC had approached her to star as the lead on the first season of The Golden Bachelorette. While the opportunity was undoubtedly exciting, Susan ultimately decided that it wasn’t the right fit for her. "I believe that they contacted my publicist and it wasn’t for me," she told People at the time. "I watched The Golden Bachelor. I really enjoyed watching The Golden Bachelor. This is a new addiction for me."

  • Susan’s love for reality dating shows has become a new hobby, and she’s excited to watch Joan Vassos find love on the upcoming season of The Golden Bachelorette. It’s clear that while she’s a fan of the show, she knows what’s best for her own life right now. “I tried it, I became instantly hooked,” she admitted. “I think I’m just a fan … it wasn’t for me but it’s something that I do love to watch.”

Remembering Helmut Huber: A Life Well-Lived

Helmut Huber was more than just Susan’s husband; he was her rock, her partner in crime, and the love of her life. In a statement released after his passing, a representative for the family shared some beautiful insights into Helmut’s life. “A family man, he was a loyal friend, and loved them deeply,” the statement read. “With a roaring sense of humor, larger-than-life personality, and a practical problem-solver, he lived his life to the fullest. Mr. Huber, who formerly raced motorcycles in Austria, was a first-rate skier and avid golfer, belonging to the Garden City Golf Club and Westhampton Country Club.”

Since Helmut’s passing, Susan has been focusing on what truly matters: spending time with friends and family while cherishing the memories they shared. “It is different for everyone and, you know, part of it is a choice to get up off the floor and put one foot in front of the other,” she reflected. “I mean, it is better to go ahead with your life. The other thing is that I know that this life is a gift, it’s meant to be a gift from God and I’m never gonna thumb my nose at that – I’m grateful. And I’m very grateful to have the love and have [had] Helmut in my life.”

Susan fondly remembers Helmut as someone who “always made me laugh and he was always there for me.” She added, “He was one of those people you wanted him to be in charge because he knew what to do and knew how to make things happen. And at the same time, [he was] coming from such a good place.”

Susan's New Guilty Pleasure: The Bachelor Franchise

It turns out that Susan’s assistant was the one who introduced her to the world of reality dating shows. “My assistant told me she was going home to watch The Bachelor with her daughters,” Susan shared. “She said, ‘Well, it’s really good.’ I watched it. The first time I watched it was that night a couple seasons ago. I was immediately engaged. I cared. I wanted to know more about these people.”

For Susan, the show quickly became “my new guilty pleasure.” While she may not be ready to jump into the dating scene herself, she’s enjoying the journey of watching others navigate the ups and downs of love and relationships.
