Back in November 2018, Morning Joe cohosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski tied the knot, but their colleague Willie Geist, surprisingly, didn’t make it to the wedding due to work commitments. Fast forward to today, and many are wondering: Is their marriage still thriving despite the challenges of working together every day? Let’s dive into the story of their relationship, the highs, the lows, and everything in between.
A Journey of Love on the Airwaves
It all started in 2007 when Mika Brzezinski joined Morning Joe as a cohost alongside Joe Scarborough. Shortly after, Willie Geist came aboard, adding another layer to their dynamic trio. As their professional relationship blossomed, so did their personal connection. By 2016, whispers about a potential romance between Joe and Mika began circulating. However, it wasn’t until May 2017 that they officially announced their engagement on-air during an episode of Morning Joe. The proposal happened while the couple was on vacation in the picturesque town of Antibes, France.
Mika later opened up about the momentous occasion during an interview with Vanity Fair. “When I saw him on one knee, I started laughing nervously, almost hysterically,” she recalled. “And then he asked, and I said, ‘Absolutely.’” It’s safe to say that love was in the air, even for two busy news personalities.

Willie's Take on Their Love Story
Willie Geist, their third wheel on Morning Joe, shared his thoughts on the couple’s love story during an episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in June 2017. “You had two single people, and I think they always had a good relationship,” Willie said. “They always had good chemistry, so I was not surprised by it. I was happy for them.” It’s clear that Willie saw the connection between Joe and Mika long before it became public knowledge.
Love Amidst the Spotlight
Despite the pressures of their high-profile careers, Joe and Mika decided to keep their wedding intimate and private. In November 2018, they exchanged vows in a small ceremony at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. “We wanted it to be really small and simple and not what you expected from Mika and Joe,” Mika explained to Vanity Fair. “Everything we do is exposed, and everything felt exposed every step of the way, so we wanted this to be private until it’s over. We wanted to recognize it more quietly and have the people who are most important to us around us.”
For a couple who spends their mornings hosting a lively show that feels like a daily cocktail party, their decision to keep their wedding intimate was a refreshing change of pace. It’s a testament to their desire to protect their personal lives from the ever-watchful eyes of the media.

Family Matters
Both Joe and Mika bring their own families into this union. Joe has four children from his previous marriages—Joey and Andrew from his first marriage to Melanie Hinton (1986–1999), and Kate and Jack from his second marriage to Susan Waren (2001–2013). Mika, on the other hand, is a mother to daughters Carlie and Emilie, whom she shares with her ex-husband Jim Hoffer. Their marriage lasted from 1993 to 2016.
Is Their Love Still Strong?
Even with all the challenges that come with being in the public eye and working together daily, Joe and Mika are still very much together. However, it hasn’t been without its bumps in the road. A source close to the couple revealed to In Touch in April 2024 that Mika has grown increasingly frustrated with Joe’s interruptions both on and off the air. This tension culminated in a dramatic confrontation that affected both their professional and personal lives.
In July 2024, insiders reported that MSNBC executives had to intervene after the couple’s arguments became noticeable on set. During a June 2024 episode of Morning Joe, Joe tried to calm Mika down, saying, “Mika, everybody’s calm here. You’re the only one raising your voice. Everybody is calm here.”

Despite these challenges, the couple continues to navigate their relationship with resilience. “Their banter has gone from adorable to annoying,” one insider noted. “Even guests complain about how uncomfortable they are on set when those two are fighting! The fear is that with the election coming up, these two will get worse!”
Joe addressed a separate issue in July 2024 after NBC pulled his broadcast due to breaking news. “We were told, in no uncertain terms on Sunday evening that there was going to be one news feed across all NBC news channels yesterday,” Joe said. “That did not happen. We were also told it was going to happen throughout the day, and I guess, after there was such a strong blowback about yesterday morning, I guess they changed their plans.”
“We were very surprised. We were very disappointed. And if we had known that there wasn’t going to be the one news feed, from NBC news across all NBC news channels. Willie, we obviously would have been in yesterday morning,” he added.
Mika chimed in, emphasizing that Morning Joe is “the place where you can go to have the hard conversations in a civil way.” Joe concluded with a firm statement, saying, “Let me just say, next time we’re told there’s going to be a news feed replacing us, we will be in our chairs. The news feed will be us, or they can get somebody else to host the show.”
